Helping Ourselves While Helping Others: Civic Engagement Toolbox for Healthcare Interpreters.
CCHI’s Chair Margarita Bekker will facilitate a conversation with Bill Rivers, Executive Director of Joint National Committee for Languages–National Council for Languages and International Studies (JNCL–NCLIS), and Don Schinske, Executive Director of California Healthcare Interpreting Association (CHIA) and Advocacy Director of Cal Capitol Group, about how healthcare interpreters can successfully advocate for their profession and for Limited English Proficient patients at the local, state, and federal levels.
The panelists will share their experiences and suggestions about effective strategies of engaging with legislators at different levels.
You Will Learn:
- How does one find out whom to contact at the state or federal level about an issue affecting their profession?
- How does one contact their representatives in a way that their voice is heard?
- How does one connect to other interested stakeholders (e.g., patient interest groups, other language and interpreter groups, civil rights organizations, etc.) and work together to achieve changes beneficial for the healthcare interpreter profession?
- How can national and state professional organizations help and how to ask them to support one’s initiative?
Panelists will provide information about specific tools and resources any interpreter can use to prepare for their professional advocacy activity.
