Within-the-TrenchesA few weeks ago we brought you the story from CBS46 News – Spanish-Speaking Metro Atlanta Couple Reunited with Telelanguage Medical Interpreter and 9-1-1 Dispatcher Who Helped Them Deliver Their Baby. On June 18th, 2019, Mario Arroyo and Carmen Gomez called 9-1-1 after Gomez went into labor at 32 weeks – their baby boy was born in the amniotic sac. Telelanguage medical interpreter, Juan, was there in seconds to interpret the call in Spanish for 9-1-1.

When you have to call 9-1-1, chances are that the situation is stressful. But what do you do when you need to communicate in another language? Interpreters who take 9-1-1 calls have specialized training for interpreting in emergencies and high-stress medical situations. Today, you can learn how Telelanguage, a language interpretation and translation company, and 9-1-1 emergency services work together to support the needs of emergency callers.

Ricardo Martinez II is the host and creator of Within the Trenches, a podcast featuring true stories from the 9-1-1 dispatchers who live them. A former 9-1-1 dispatcher himself, Ricardo welcomes Gina, the Communications Officer with Roswell PD who took the 9-1-1 call, and Juan, the Telelanguage Medical Interpreter who interpreted for the Spanish-speaking couple, on Episode 280 of the podcast.

Interpreting in Emergencies: Quotes from the Interview

“They asked for the Spanish interpreter. We have a quick dial for Telelanguage, gave them Spanish, and as soon as we had the Spanish interpreter and said what as wrong…you become fully focused and aware of what is happening.” – Gina, Communications Officer with Roswell PD

“When we take the calls, we never think our call is going to make it to the news. To help is just enough…We’re going to help 9-1-1 deliver a baby.” – Juan, Telelanguage Certified Medical Interpreter
