2016 saw considerable changes to regulations for hospitals and the healthcare industry. These changes highlight the need for effective language services and language access programs in hospitals and health care settings. Implementation of higher quality language access programs will continue to be a priority for the healthcare industry in 2017.
One major change for the healthcare industry in 2016 was the Section 1557 ruling by Health and Human Services (HHS). This new ruling elevates the level of language access that hospitals and government funded healthcare programs must offer Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients and also changed the language of who may be considered an interpreter from “Competent” to “Qualified.” The ruling mandated compliance by October 18th, 2016.
Another important change was the Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating System from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) (July 2016). The new rating system assigns United States hospitals a one-to-five star rating. With the need for more quality language access programs in hospitals, improving these language access programs will remain a major focus for hospitals and healthcare programs.
